Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Emergency
Active OutbreakKentucky is currently experiencing its most severe Pertussis outbreak since 2012. As of November 2025, the state has confirmed 566 cases, a sharp escalation driven by waning immunity and lower vaccination rates. The outbreak has turned deadly, with three infant deaths reported in the last 12 months.
Public health officials note that none of the deceased infants or their mothers had received the Tdap vaccination during pregnancy. The outbreak is widespread, with significant clusters identified in Lexington-Fayette and spreading to over 34 counties.

Measles Resurgence
Following a confirmed outbreak declaration in July 2025, Kentucky continues to monitor measles clusters. The state has recorded 14 confirmed cases this year, primarily in unvaccinated individuals. The initial vector was identified as an adult traveler, with subsequent community transmission in Fayette, Woodford, and surrounding counties.

While overall respiratory illness activity is currently classified as "Low," early winter indicators show rising trends. RSV activity is increasing across the South, including Kentucky. Influenza cases are elevated compared to previous months but remain below peak seasonal thresholds.
